Leatile Gaopale“I’ve realized that I am now capable of being a leader, I feel more responsible and I have learned to come up with solutions”, says Leatile Gaolape of The Guardian Sun in Botswana, referring to the impact of her participation in the Women in News (WIN) programme.

Leatile is a Sophomore participant in WIN, a capacity building programme launched by the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) in 2010 to equip high- potential women media professionals with the skills, strategies and support networks to progress to leading roles within their news organisations.

In her late thirties, bubbly and easy going Ngubeni said this when giving a keynote address to participants of a groundbreaking leadership programme for African women working in the media held at Indaba Hotel, Johannesburg South Africa.

Ngubeni told the women that they are their own authors and none should dictate to them what they should do. “You influence others through the work that you do and what you should ask yourself is what influence you have on others,” Ngubeni said.

Michael DakaThe first year of the Women in News programme ended on a high note in Johannesburg on December 14 as participants got an inspirational and motivational talk from one of Southern Africa’s veteran journalist and founder of Zambia's Breeze 89.3 FM, Mike Daka.

Daka, who is now in his 50's, spoke of the journey that he has travelled, the risks that he took despite disapproval from family and friends and his ultimate success after setting up Breeze FM. As difficult as it was in the beginning, with no loan to launch the station, Daka did not give up on his dream.

His perseverance, determination and hard work thus eventually paid off as Daka is now a successful businessman running a successful commercial radio station in Zambia, which is also based in a rural part of the country.
